Board Announces Atlanta as the Location of its 18th Annual
Conference on Men and Masculinities
The Board of the American Men's Studies Association at its annual meeting in conjunction with AMSA's 17th Annual Conference in Montréal chose the city of Atlanta, Georgia as its meeting site for the 18th annual conference March 25-28, 2010. More information will be available as further decisions are taken.

2009 "Men & Masculinities" Conference Is AMSA's
Largest Ever
AMSA President Robert Heasley (left) welcomed over 120 scholars and practitioners to the 17th Annual Conference on Men and Masculinities April 3-5, 2009 in Montréal. The number made it AMSA's largest conference ever. The 2009 Conference with the theme Beyond Borders: Masculinities and Margins. began at 1:30pm Friday April 3rd, and included presentations by over 100
international
scholars, practitioners and activists. With the exception of the
Friday evening dinner, all conference events were held at Concordia
University.
The Friday evening grand dinner took place at the McGill's Faculty Club. Noted Social Theorist and Author Victor Seidler (right) delivered the 2009 Conference keynote address. Seidler is Professor of Sociology at Goldsmith's College of the University of London.
AMSA’s annual conference continues to be the largest annual men's studies conference in North America, drawing an international group of participants representing a broad range of academic disciplines and interests. An open and affirming event featuring scholarship and respectful dialogue on the critical study of men and masculinities, anyone with an interest in this emerging field of study is welcome to participate. Prior to the Conference participants gathered in four pre-conference workshops: "Teaching Men's Studies: Unique Pedagogies" Description (pdf); "Teaching Young Males: A Workshop for those Working in Schools and Related Professions" Description (pdf); "Finding Meaningfulness and Harmony in Daily Life: The Integrity Model in Counseling and Psychotherapy with Men" Description (pdf); "The Internationalization of Men’s Studies: The State of the Debate in Quebec and What Can Be the Future?" Description (pdf).

Masculinités et sociétés from Université Laval and Université de Montréal awarded AMSA approximately $2,000 (Canadian) for expenses related to 2009 conference keynote speakers. Masculinités et sociétés is a funded research group affiliated with Université Laval (Quebec City) and Université de Montréal. It is engaged in a research program evaluating the adequacy of social services provided to men in crisis in Quebec. M&S’s activities include organizing academic conferences or colloquiums and taking part in other academic events related to its purposes. It is directed by Dr. Jocelyn Lindsay, Professor and Head, School of
Social Work, Université Laval.

participated in the 2008 AMSA Conference on Men and Masculinities, Masculinities
and Institutions: Mapping the Connections, April 4th through 6th
at Wake Forest University. The conference featured two keynote
addresses, pre-conference men’s studies workshops, and presentations
by over 50 scholars, practitioners and activists. AMSA’s conference
continues to be the largest annual men's studies conference in the United
States, drawing an international group of participants representing a
broad range of academic disciplines and interests. An open and
affirming event featuring scholarship and respectful dialogue on the
critical study of men and masculinities, anyone with an interest in this
emerging field of study is welcome to participate.

on Father's Day Based on His Experience at the 2007 AMSA Conference
"On Sunday, I will give and receive cards for Father’s Day
But the occasion also is a great opportunity to discuss what it is to be a good dad and a real man. Some guidance came from the recent American Men’s Studies Association conference at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.
Television is not a good teacher. However, we let it define good dads and real men. That’s a bigger problem for African-Americans.
Conference participants learned that white viewers see TV fathers and their own as being about the same. Black viewers felt media fathers were more positive than their own...."
