Togetherness

The past few years have been difficult in untold and untellable ways. As part of this, it has meant that AMSA has not been able to be in-person with all of us in the room together. To seek to recenter ourselves on our mission and ethos, this year's conference is focused on coming back together in person with each other. ASMA's conferences have always focused on community and an ethos of collective-engagement and togetherness, and this year our core focus will be on renewing this spirit that these conferences have always had.

While this is not a theme in the traditional sense, we see this as an invitation to think through togetherness and communion - particularly in light of traditionalist masculinity's position of individualism and the "self made man" myth. As such, this year's conference invites us to consider our past while also pinning our hopes on better futures, futures marked by a commitment to equity and inclusion, to diversity and multiculturalism, to togetherness.

We live in deeply divided times, times that are marked by both a hope and a fear. We live in what we hope is the beginning of the next side of the pandemic (towards an endemic), a pandemic that further revealed to us how embedded systemic racism & classism is within our cultures; but also the desire for community after months of isolation. Today we are challenged to think and rethink how we engage with, relate to, harm, heal, co-exist, and love one another. It is for this reason that we are choosing to focus on togetherness writ large.

Conference Registration Information

Given the ongoing impacts of inflation and austerity within higher education and beyond, AMSA has decided to significantly reduce conference registration fees for 2023 as follows:

  • Student Registration (proof of student status required) = $50 (67% reduction)
  • Member registration = $150 (45% reduction)
  • Non-member registration = $225 (31% reduction)
If you are not yet a member and would like to take advantage of the member discount for conference registration, be sure to JOIN AMSA prior to registering for the conference. Membership in AMSA costs $50, so you can save money while also gaining access to members-only benefits such as our database of course syllabi, our membership directory, and additional member benefits being developed.

Support AMSA Initiatives

We are also inviting you to consider donating to AMSA in order support the organization's ongoing operations during this time. When registering, you will be given the opportunity to donate in the following ways:

  • "Sponsor" a student - offsets the costs associated with our deeply reduced registration for students.
  • AMSA's General Gift Fund supports the ongoing operations of AMSA, with a particular focus on mentoring for new and emerging scholars and practitioners.
  • The Samuel Femiano Men's Studies Lecture Fund is an endowment created to support an invited Men's Studies plenary lecture each year at AMSA's annual conference.
  • The Loren Frankel Memorial Scholarship Fund is an endowment created to support annual competitive scholarships to one or more students attending and presenting at the annual conference.

We appreciate donations of any amount and also recognize that many are unable to give at this time. We appreciate your consideration.

Refund Policies

  • Full refunds of conference registration fees will be administered only if requested on or before 31 May 2023
  • Donations are non-refundable.
